Skimming in Wrexham
A skim coat is a thin layer of finishing plaster applied over existing walls or ceilings. JB Plastering skims walls and ceilings for homes in Wrexham, Chester and the surrounding areas, covering fine cracks, old repairs and tired surfaces with a smooth finish that is ready to decorate.
Skimming for Walls and Ceilings
Skimming is often the quickest way to transform a room without the disruption of a full replaster, as long as the plaster underneath is in good condition.
Skimming enquiries can cover:
- Walls with fine cracks, dents or patched repairs
- Textured or patterned ceilings
- New plasterboard that needs a finished surface
- Hallways, stairs and landings
- Rooms being refreshed before new flooring or decorating

Can You Skim Over Old Plaster?
Yes, as long as the plaster is sound and firmly attached to the wall. Hollow-sounding areas, crumbling plaster and large cracks usually mean the old plaster has come away, and a skim over the top will not last. In that case a full replaster is the better choice. James checks the walls before quoting, so you are not paying for more work than the room needs.
Can Textured Ceilings Be Skimmed?
Most can. Skimming over a sound textured or patterned ceiling gives a flat, modern finish without taking the ceiling down. On a recent job the patterned ceiling in a long corridor was skimmed and the walls finished to match. Some older textured coatings need checking before they are worked on, so mention the age of the property when you get in touch.
Skimming New Plasterboard
Where a wall or ceiling has been damaged, the boards are replaced and skimmed so the new and old surfaces read as one. One customer had a kitchen re-boarded and reskimmed, then booked James again for their bathroom.
Leave Enough Time Before Decorating
A skim coat is thinner than a full plaster finish but still needs to dry completely before painting. It is normally sealed with a thinned mist coat first; follow the paint manufacturer's guidance for new plaster.
